phancy.com rating:

phancy.com notes: Starts off with an abusive relationship, dials the grimdark vibes to 11, and then leaves the knob there for the rest of the movie. There's a ton of nasty mayhem and violence, but none of the chaotic glee of the previous movies. It's full of purposely provocative and upsetting scenes, but doesn't understand that you need some breathing room around them. The downtime between the more horrific sections is filled with various degrees of domestic violence and, with nothing to balance out all that tension, it all becomes tiring and boring. Instead of a thrilling roller coaster ride, it's just a steady free fall. It also continues the trend I hate of every shot being filmed with the same underlit, grey color palette.

2 out of 4 stars - rogerebert.com

While Sebastian Vanicek's consistently vicious gorefest has a few undeniably clever set pieces, they're surrounded by some deeply incompetent filmmaking. A washed-out visual palette, clunky editing, awful score, and seriously dodgy third-act VFX hold back a film that also too often mistakes brutality for personality, resulting in the first film in this impossible-to-kill franchise that is for completists only.

Grade: C - Evil Dead Burn unleashes a family of monsters-in-law with a too-serious edge

Sébastien Vanicek's Evil Dead Burn takes a number of ambitious swings to stand out from what has become a full-fledged horror franchise, but not all of these decisions fit seamlessly into the series' framework. It's a misfit standalone entry that has moments of humor and striking camera moves but ventures into too-serious territory in such a way that it loses the Evil Dead spirit of guilt-free chaos.
